Help:Terms

There are several terms that you may have come across, but may not know exactly what they mean. They are listed here.

bot
A bot is a program that automatically does edits on this website. It is capable of doing mass edits (for instance, changing links, massive corrections, etc) that would be impractical and time consuming for a human to do.
cat
Slang for "category", which is typically used in edit summaries.
desc
Slang for description, which is typically used in edit summaries for categories that are being defined.
diff
Slang for "difference", which is the process of comparing two sets of edits (via the "history" tab) to view what was changed.
mirroring
Mirroring is the process of making an exact duplicate of the content, but at another website. Mirroring is typically done with the permission of those whom originated the mirrored content. Typically, mirrors exist in the event the main website were to ever go down due to technical or other issues.
namespace
A namespace is best described as the domain that an article inhabits.
Nuggets
A friendly term for "newbies", or newcomers to the Battlestar Pegasus website. The term is derived from the re-imagined series term for new, but inexperienced pilots in the Colonial Fleet.
Redirect
A redirect is essentially a page that automatically redirects to another page. For instance, a misspelling of "Gallactica" would redirect to the proper spelling of "Galactica". (see Help:Redirect)
revert
A revert is the process of undoing an edit or series of edits, thus recovering an article as it was in a past state. While typically good to remove vandalism or nonsense edits, this can be seen as heavy handed when used on edits that people simply don't agree with.
Sockpuppet
A sock puppet is another user account of an already established user on the site. Typically, sock puppets are discouraged (or outright banned) due to the fact that they have, more often than not, been used on other websites to give the false appearance of there being multiple users, whereas only one person is controlling. Such people typically create multiple accounts present the illusion of multiple people agreeing with a point, the illusion of there being a "war" over content, or an attempt to flood votes to a request for editorship to give the illusion of grassroots support or opposition.
substitution
Substitution is the process of copying content on a MediaWiki-run website without using the copy-and-paste method. It typically works by creating a new article, typing in {{subst:article}} and then submitting it. By using this method, content from the source page is automagically imported into the new article.
Template substitution
Template substitution is the process of including templates into any page or talk page, operating the exact same way as substitution does.
tweak
A "tweak" is a term for a minor edit, but instead of (or in addition to) checking the "This is a minor edit" box, a user will add this to the edit summary line, perhaps even with some clarification of what was tweaked.
updated
"Updated" or its various tenses are used in the edit summary to denote that the article has been "updated". There may be clarification from the user who did the updating. More often than not, it is used without clarification.
User contributions
The user contributions list is an automatically collated listing of the contributions made by any user, regardless of whether or not they are registered. User contributions can be accessed by going to Special:Contributions and typing in the name of the user or, if you are on the user's page, simply click "Toolbox" on the sidebar and select the "User contributions" link. Users themselves can check out their own contributions by clicking "Personal tools" on the sidebar and then clicking "My contributions".
Username
A username is your site-wide pen name, which is to say the name you go by on Battlestar Pegasus. Sometimes this is the same as or similar enough to your real name, although some like to be creative with their usernames.
